Halfway through the day of going through museums, I concluded that walking through the exhibits would have been a lot more fun with Lewis than with my parents. They loved to stop and talk about the meaning of each painting, and while I knew that Lewis loved his art, I still think the conversation would have gone a lot differently.

Not to mention the fact that my parents would sneak a kiss or a hug whenever they thought I wasn’t watching. So embarrassing. Not that they weren’t this way at home. They just seemed to be extra excited to be with each other.

While they giggled in the next room, I stared up at a tapestry that was older than my country. The color had faded, but the picture was still clear. There was so much history here and I felt like I’d only scratched the surface.

“Ready, sweetie?” Mom’s voice made me jump.

“What? Oh. Yeah, let’s go.” I glanced back at the tapestry again and followed them out to the car. It was almost time for my tour of the college, and the nerves were starting to kick in.

Mom wrapped an arm around my shoulders. “You don’t have to make any decisions right now. It’s just to look at options.”

“I don’t even know if I have the grades or test scores to make it happen.”

“You have a perfect GPA and scored high on the tests. You’ll be fine.”

She was right, but that still didn’t mean I could make it in. We walked the few blocks to the college and went straight to the main building. Mom and Dad checked in, while I stared at the architecture. And while the tour of the campus was informative, I grew more impatient to see the library.

It was so much bigger and better than I’d expected. Even Mom and Dad gasped when we walked inside. Okay, so they were book nerds like me, but at least this meant they weren’t staring into each other’s eyes or something worse.

And all I could think about was the fact that Lewis wasn’t here to show me around. To show his favorite section or tell me what inspired the architecture. I pushed the thoughts away and moved to one of the sections. Many of the books were in languages I didn’t understand, a few had words I vaguely recognized from studying Gaelic.

It wasn’t until Mom tapped on my shoulder that I noticed how dark it had grown outside. I set the book I’d been reading aside and stretched.

“Enjoying yourself?” Mom smiled and sat at the desk next to me.

“Apparently more than I thought. Where’s Dad?” I rubbed my eyes. The book of mythology I’d been reading still called to me, but I pushed it away. I’d have to look for a copy of it when I got home.

She nodded toward the front of the library. “He’s getting the application information for you. We need to get going if you want to eat dinner with Lewis’s family.”

“Oh. Right.” I grabbed my bag and stood.
